Blog: Get-on-the-Bus Tour: A Trip to 3 Black Businesses in Los Angeles County on 7-22-17

When we look around us, as African Americans, we see so many problems in the Black community we don’t know where to begin. Poverty. Homelessness. Mass incarceration. Police brutality. Murder.

So, where do we start to help fix some of the problems? Like Booker T. Washington said in his autobiography, Up From Slavery, we start where we are. To this end, Dr. Rosie Milligan, as the chairperson of the West Coast Supporters of the Harvest Institute (http://www.harvestinstitute.org/ (Harvestinstitue.org.) under the leadership by Dr. Claud Anderson,) spearheaded another “Get on the Bus” tour to 3 Black businesses on 7-22-17.

This is not the first tour, but this is better because we now have social media. In Dr. Claud Anderson’s book, Powernomics: The National plan to Empower Black People, (2001), he proposed that, as a race, we do business with our own kind, just as we did before integration. This is nothing new. This is exactly what we did when we were segregated in America before we drank the Kool-Aid that “The White Man’s Ice was Colder.”

When Blacks could only do business with one another, we had Black Wall street, Black hospitals, Black hotels, Black schools, Black grocery stores, and Black hair care industry, just to name a few. Unfortunately, Black businesses are failing at an alarming rate because of a lack of support from the Black community. Many Blacks now will buy the same products, only from another race.

In an effort to alleviate this problem, Dr. Rosie Milligan initiated The get-on-the-bus tour on 7-22-17. It involved shopping at 3 Black businesses in the Los Angeles County area. First, we went to a Black Beauty Supply place, A Girl Cave. 1856 w. Manchester. Inglewood CA. (323) 875 8116, next, Ms. Ann’s Boutique 2633 W. Manchester, Inglewood, CA (320) 738 9528, and last, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Owner Kia Patterson, 2175 West Rosecrans Ave., Compton, CA 90222 (310)668-5527.

What is different now is we have social media to help spread the word. Please contact the businesses listed above or post on your social media walls.

Remember. No one can save us, but us.

This was an exhilarating experience. Hope we do it again soon.

Along this mindset, you can also now order Black made products from www.buyblackmovement.com.

If you would like to launch a “Get on the Bus” tour in your city, contact Dr. Rosie Milligan at, 1425 W. Manchester Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90047. (www.drrosie.com.) 323-750-3592.

*Dr. Claud Anderson is a noted black author who has successfully implemented social and economic change throughout his career. His unique background of experience is reflected in PowerNomics: The National Plan. To implement the strategy of industrializing Black communities, he has established a vertically integrated seafood industry that is currently operating and will expand into urban areas across the nation. His company is one of the few black-owned companies to make stock available to the general public through an initial public offering. In addition to his most recent seafood project, he owns a vertically integrated publishing company and was one of the first blacks to own a radio station in Florida.

Dr. Anderson headed two economic development corporations in Florida and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce and the head of the Coastal Plains Regional Commission. In that position, he worked with governors in the southeast states to develop and fund economic development projects, including seafood. He was Coordinator of Education for the State of Florida under Governor Rubin Askew during integration and has held a number of high-level positions in national and state politics. He is also President of The Harvest Institute, a black research, education and advocacy organization. He is imminently qualified to offer a plan to empower Black America.
