How I Began to work in the Prison Ministry Through My Literary Services

Dr. Maxine Thompson

Matthew 25:36 “ …I was in prison and you visited me.”

Like most things in the writing life, I stumbled upon what was to become “My Prison Ministry” through my Maxine Thompson Literary Services. In 2005, I had edited Vickie Stringer’s Book, How to Succeed in the Self-Publishing Game, a self-help book for aspiring writers, which went out to the prisons. She’d added my name under the resources as a Book Doctor/editor. (I’d also edited several of Vickie Stringer’s Essence Best Selling series, Dirty Red. http://www.amazon.com/Vickie-M.-Stringer/e/B001H6IE3G).

Given the high rate of incarceration of people of color, I began to hear from men and women who were locked up. Some prisoners who reached out had heard of me through word-of-mouth.

Some books I’ve edited since that time have been memoir, She’s All Caught Up, (2014) by Jamila T. Davis, The Reminder (2014) by Brooklyn Davis, self-help book, Sunny 101: The 10 Commandments of a Boss Chick by Sunshine Smith-Williams. One of the first books I edited by an inmate was best-selling novel, Whore, (2005) by Tanika Lynch, and too many to mention here. Some of the writers were incarcerated at the time, but have since been released from prison.

I’ve content edited several of publisher, author, Wahida Clark’s books, two of which hit the New York Times Best Selling List, Payback Ain’t Enough, and Honor Thy Thug. She too, had started writing while she was in what she described as “Behind the Wall,” in an interview on my Internet Radio show on Artistfirst.com.

As an editor, I have found there was/is a need to help writers who have been “behind the walls” or are currently “behind the walls.”

I found from that many writers who have been incarcerated have stories which reflect their personal journeys. These stories can be viewed as cautionary tales for young people to avoid the same trap. Therein lies the benefit.

Moreover, many incarcerated, aspiring writers enjoy reading what is called “Street Lit.” I’ve edited many of the best-selling street lit authors, including New York Times Best Selling Authors, Ashley and Jaquavis’s first novel, (first printing),Dirty Money (2006), Filmmaker, Publisher, New York Times Best Selling Author,Carl Weber’s The Family Business Series, New York Times Best Selling Author, Nikki Turner’s recent novel, Carl Weber’s Kingpins in Miami, which is another way in which prisoners found my services. They’ve read books I’ve edited.

On an another level. Some of the deepest minds and best writers I’ve worked with are, or have been, incarcerated. It says a lot about our racist system, which is the subject for another day. But writing is freeing, so writers need to write, no matter what circumstances they find themselves in.

There are no accidents in life. Had I not lived the life I lived growing up in the inner city of Detroit, had I not been a social worker in Detroit and Los Angeles for 23 years of my previous work life before I became a full-time writer/editor, I would never have found my purpose. I am happy to be on my purpose and honored to have helped shape the voices of Black writers with these urban experiences.

In conclusion, there is a need for more editors to work with writers in the prisons.

For those incarcerated, I encourage you to continue to write. Writing is healing.

“Let your mess become your message,
Let your misery become your ministry.”
